Crochet Granny’s Shining Star Square

This pattern is for a 12″square.

Materials:

Worsted Weight Yarn: 3 Colors approximately 30 yards each (I used Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand Yarn)

C1 – Magenta C2 – Kelly Green C3 – Mustard

Hook: I

Scissors

Stitches:

Ch – Chain, Sk – Skip, Sp – Space,  St – Stitch,  Sl St – Slip Stitch, Sc – Single Crochet

Hdc – Half Double Crochet Dc – Double Crochet

FPHdc – Front Post Half Double Crochet BPHdc – Back Post Half Double Crochet

Tips:

When working into the first stitch after a chain one in the corner stitches, be very careful to use the correct stitch. If you miss this stitch your count will be off.

Instructions:

Using Color C1

Magic Loop- 

Round 1: Ch 1, Sc 10 Sts in the Magic Loop. Join with Sl St to the beginning Sc. = 10 Sc

Round 2: Ch 1, (Sc, Ch 3, Sc) in 1st St, Sk St, *(Sc, Ch 3, Sc) in next St, Sk St*, Repeat * * 3 More times. Join with Sl St to the beginning Sc. = 5 (Sc, Ch 3, Sc)

Round 3: Sl St in the 1st Ch 3 Sp, Ch 1, *(2 Sc, Ch 2, 2 Sc)* in Ch 3 Sp, Repeat * * in each Ch 3 Sp around. Join with Sl St to beginning Sc. = 20 Sc and 5 Ch 2 Sps

Round 4: Ch 1, Sc in same St, Sc in next St, *(2 Hdc, Dc, 2 Hdc) in Ch 2 Sp, Sc in next 4 Sts*, Repeat * * around ending with 2 Sc on the last repeat. Join with Sl St to the beginning Sc. = 20 Sc, 20 Hdc, 5 Dc. Finish off

Change to Color C2

Round 5: Join new color with Sl St to any Dc(tip of the star), Ch 1, Sc in same St, Ch 7, *Sc in next Dc, Ch 7*, Repeat * * 3 more times. Join with Sl St to beginning Sc. = 5 Ch 7 Spaces and 5 Sc

Round 6: Ch 1, Sc in same St, Sc 9 in the Ch 7 Sp, * Sc in the next Sc, Sc 9 in the next Ch 7 Sp*, Repeat * * 3 more times. Join with Sl St to beginning Sc. = 50 Sc

Round 7: Ch 1, Sc in same St, Sc in next 3 Sts, 2 Sc in next St, * Sc in next 4 Sts, 2 Sc in next St*. Repeat * * around. Join with Sl St to beginning Sc. = 60 Sc. Finish Off

Change to Color C3

Working in the Back Loop Only for this row.

Round 8: Join with Sl St to the Back Loop of any St, Ch 1, Sc in same St, Sc in next 4 Sts, 2 Sc in next St, *Sc in next 5 Sts, 2 Sc in next St*, Repeat * * Around. Join with Sl St to beginning Sc. = 70 Sc

Round 9: Ch 1, Sc in same St, Sc in next 5 Sts, 2 Sc in next St, * Sc in next 6 Sts, 2 Sc in next St*, Repeat * * around. Join with Sl St to beginning Sc. Finish off. = 80 Sc

Change to Color C1

*Important Placement of beginning St – With the star positioned in the normal way (1 tip at the top), Join with Sl St in a Back Loop of Row 9 in the stitch directly above the star tip at the top of the star.

Round 10: Ch 1, Sc in same St, Sc in next St, Hdc in next 3 Sts, Dc in next 4 Sts, Trc in next 2 Sts, Ch1, Trc in next 2 Sts, Dc in next 4 Sts, Hdc in next 3 Sts, *Sc in next 2 Sts, Hdc in next 3 Sts, Dc in next 4 Sts, Trc in next 2 Sts, Ch 1, Trc in next 2 Sts, Dc in next 4 Sts, Hdc in next 3 Sts*, Repeat * * 2 more times. Round 11: Ch 1, Hdc in same St and each stitch across to the 1st Ch 1 Sp(1st Corner), *(Hdc, Ch 1 Hdc) in Ch 1 Sp, Hdc in next 20 Sts*, Repeat * * 2 more times, (Hdc, Ch 1, Hdc) in last Ch 1 Sp, Hdc across to beginning Hdc. Join with Sl St to beginning Hdc. Finish off. = 88 Hdc & 4 Ch 1 Sps

Change to Color C2

Join with Sl St to top of Ch 2. = 72 FPHdc, 36 BPHdc, 8 Hdc, 4 Ch 1 Sps.

If your square is smaller than the 12″ you can add another round of Sc. Or you can make Round 14 in Hdc in the same stitch count.

Alternative for sizing: Round 15:

Ch 1, *Sc in next 31 St, 3 Sc in Ch 1 Sp*, Repeat * * around. Join with Sl St to beginning Sc. Finish Off. = 136 Sc
