Crochet Earflap Hat with Rolled Brim

H/8-5.00mm crochet hook- 18 mo thru 5 toddler
J/10-6.00mm crochet hook-Childs small thru adult small
K/10.5-6.5mm
Pull Tie Bow using 1.5” grosgrain ribbon

“H” hook 3”= 9 dc stitches; 2 1/2”= 4rows (18 mo thru 5 toddler)
“J” hook 3”= 8 dc stitches 2 3/4”= 4 rows child small thru adult small
“K” hook 3”= 9 dc stitches 3”= 4 rows adult med – large

Using MC – Ch3 and slp st in 1st ch to form a ring (you can ch4 if you like, but I like a tighter circle. If you are a beginner you may want to ch4)
RND 1:
ch3(this will count as 1dc) 12 dc in ring, join in third ch of beginning ch3 (13dc)
RND 2:
ch3 dc in joining st; 2 dc in each stitch around, and join in third ch of beginning ch3 (26 dc)
RND 3:
ch3, 2dc in nxt st, * 2 dc in nxt st, 1 dc in nxt st* repeat between * * around, and join in third ch of beginning ch3 (39 dc)
RND 4:
ch3, 1 dc in nxt st, 2dc in nxt st; * 1 dc in nxt st 2 times, 2 dc in nxt st * repeat between * * around, and join in third ch of beginning ch3 (52 dc)
RND 5:
1 dc in each st around, and join in third ch of beginning ch3 (52 dc)
RND 6:
ch 1, sc in joining st, sc in each st around, join to top of 1st sc (52 sc)
RND 7:

ch 3, dc in first sc, cross back and dc in joining st, (This makes the first cross stitch) * Skip 1 sc, make 1dc in next sc; 1dc in skipped sc * (repeat between * * around) drop MC to the back, and pull up CC when joining in third ch of beginning ch 3 (53 dc this includes ch3) (26 cross stitches)
*NOTE* you will be adding the new color before the joining stitch is finished at the end of the rounds. This makes for a clean transition from one color to another.
RND 8:
sc in each stitch around, join to top of first sc (53 sc)
RND 9:
ch 1 sc in joining st, ch 3 * skip 2 sc, sc in nxt st, ch 3, repeat between * * around, join in first scmade. (18 arches)
RND 10:
slp st in nxt two stitches, ch1 and sc in arch by putting hook under arch,drawing up a loop and pulling through two, making a “sc in the arch”, ch 3, *sc in next arch, ch3 * repeat between * * around, join in first sc made. (18 arches)
RND 11:
ch2, 2 hdc in arch-(putting hook under arch and pull up loop) * 1 hdc in sc, 2 hdc in arch* repeat between * * around, drop CC to the back, and pull up the MC joining in 2nd ch of beginning ch 2 (54 hdc this include ch2)
RND 12:

ch 3, dc in first hdc, cross back and dc in joining st, (This makes the first cross stitch) * Skip 1 hdc, make 1dc in next hdc; 1dc in skipped hdc* repeat between * * around, join to third ch of beginning ch 3

RND 13:
ch 1, sc in joining stitch and in each stitch around, slip stitch in the first sc made. (55 sc)
RND 14:
ch 1, sc in joining stitch and in each stitch around, drop MC to the back pull up the CC & join in the first sc made. (55 sc)
RND 15:
ch 1, sc in joining stitch and in front loop only (this is done to prepare for the earflap attachment, as you will be executing sc’s and attaching the earflap in the unused back loop) of each stitch around, slip stitch in the first sc made. (55 sc)
RND 16:
sc in joining st, (Please sc in normal fashion using the both loops throughout the rest of the pattern) 2 sc in nxt st, *sc in nxt stitch, 2 sc in nxt st* repeat between * * around. IMPORTANT NOTE, BEFORE COMPLETING LAST SC IN ROUND DROP “CC” AND PULL UP THE “MC” TO COMPLETE THE SC join in first sc made (83 sc)
RND 17-19:
sc in each stitch around (83) sc.
End off with both colors, weave in ends and tie securely.
EAR FLAPS
ROW 1:
Holding the hat so that you are looking inside, use Pink & attach at row 15, using the unused back loop, tie yarn securely, (using the joining seam as a guide, count 27 stitches the opposite direction or across the back of the hat, and place a marker in the 27th stitch. Please take note of above picture, the joining seam is visible on the left side of hat) draw up a loop, ch2, hdc in next stitch 8 times, ch2 and turn
ROW 2:
yo, draw up a loop in nxt st, yo, draw up a loop in nxt st, yo pull through all loops on hook, This is a hdc decrease; (hdc in next st) 4 times, hdc in top of ch2 that was made in row 1, ch 2 and turn
ROW 3:
hdc decrease, (hdc in next st) 2 times, hdc in top of ch2 that was made in row 2, ch 2 and turn
ROW 4:
hdc decrease, hdc in next st, hdc in top of ch2 that was made in row 3, ch 2 and turn
ROW 5:
hdc decrease, pull through all loops, there will be one
loop on hook, end off
Attach yarn at the base of ch2 of Row 1, you will be trimming the ear flap and making the tie in this step. Proceed as follows, sc in each st up the side, and make 2 sc at the peak top stitch, ch 30 , hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch until you get back to the ear flap. Continue trimming….sc in side of each stitch until you reach the base, and then continue to sc around that inside brim, using that extra loop you have been using, until you reach the marker. Remove marker then proceed with second earflap.
EAR FLAP 2
ROW 1:
Hdc in nxt st 9 times, ch 2 and turn
ROW 2:
yo, draw up a loop in nxt st, yo, draw up a loop in nxt st, yo pull through all loops on hook, This is a hdc decrease; (hdc in next st) 4 times, hdc in top of ch2 that was made in row 1, ch 2 and turn
ROW 3:
hdc decrease, (hdc in next st) 2 times, hdc in top of ch2 that was made in row 2, ch 2 and turn
ROW 4:
hdc decrease, hdc in next st, hdc in top of ch2 that was made in row 3, ch 2 and turn
ROW 5:
hdc decrease, pull through all loops, there will be one loop on hook, end off
Attach yarn at the base of 1st hdc of Row 1, you will be trimming the ear flap and making the tie in this step. Proceed as follows.
sc in each st up the side, and make 2 sc at the peak top stitch, ch 30 , hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch until you get back to the ear flap. Continue trimming….sc in side of each stitch until you reach the base, and then continue to sc around that inside brim, using that extra loop you have been using, until you reach the opposite earflap. End off and weave in all ends.
Sew Bow in place on Rnd 12 in desired area.
