Materials
- 5mm crochet hook
- DK weight yarn – 590yds cream, 320yds second colour. I’ve used StyleCraft Merry Go Round and StyleCraft Special DK.
- Darning needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations
- Dc = double crochet
- Sc = single crochet
- Ch = chain
Spiked cluster = 1dc in the space between the 3dc cluster from the previous round. 1 long dc in the centre dc from the previous round, 1 dc in the space between the 3dc cluster from the previous round.
Notes on the Pattern
The pattern is for a 30” x 30” blanket. You can make the blanket as big or as small as you like by working more or less rounds until you reach your desired size. The pattern is written in US terms.
Long dc means to pull up your yarn to extend the dc to the same height as the dc on the row. 5dc means to make 5 dc in the same space.
The pattern is worked in the round without turning.
Instructions in brackets mean to make all of the stitches in the same space. Instructions in between * * mean to repeat the instructions until the pattern says otherwise.
Gauge = 5 rounds in the pattern = 4” x 4”.
Instructions
Use cream yarn.
Round 1
Make a magic circle. Ch3 (counts as first dc here and throughout the pattern), make 2dc into the ring, ch1, make 3dc into the ring, ch1, make 3dc into the ring, ch1, make 3dc, ch1, join with a slip stitch to the top of thech3.
Round 2
(Ch3, 2dc in the ch1 space) makes first half of corner here and throughout the pattern. In the next ch1 corner space, (3dc, ch1, 3dc), (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in the next ch1 corner space, (3dc, ch1) in the same space as your first 3dc. To finish the first corner, work (3dc, ch1) in the same space as your first 3dc. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch3. Fasten off.
Use second colour yarn.
Round 3
(Ch3, 2dc) in the ch1 space from the previous round, make 1 spiked cluster in the next space (see abbreviations above). (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in the ch1 corner space, make 1 spiked cluster in the next space, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in the ch1 corner space, make 1 spiked cluster in the next space, (3dc, ch1) in the same space as your first 3dc. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch3. Fasten off.
Use cream yarn.
Round 4
(Ch3, 2dc) in the ch1 space from the previous round, *make 1 spiked cluster in each of the next 2 spaces, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in the ch1 corner space*. Repeat from * to * until you’ve made the 3rd corner, make 1 spiked cluster in each of the next 2 spaces. To finish the first corner or (3dc, ch1) in the same space as your first 3dc. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch3. Continue in cream yarn.
Round 5
(Ch3, 2dc) in the ch1 space from the previous round, *make 1 spiked cluster in each of the next spaces until the corner, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in the ch1 corner space*. Repeat from * to * until after the 3rd corner, make 1 spiked cluster in each of the spaces until the first corner. To finish the first corner or (3dc, ch1) in the same space as your first 3dc. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch3. Fasten off.
Rounds 6-32
Repeat the following for round 6 to measure the desired length:
- Round 6 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 7-8 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 9 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 10-11 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 12 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 13-14 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 15 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 16-17 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 18 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 19-20 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 21 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 22-23 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 24 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 25-26 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 27 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 28-29 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5.
- Round 30 - Change to second colour yarn, repeat round 5.
- Rounds 31-32 - Change to cream yarn, repeat round 5. Fasten off.
Border
With your second colour yarn, join to the corner space. (Ch3, 2dc). Skip the next stitch, sc in the next stitch, *skip the next stitch, 5dc in the next stitch, skip the next stitch, sc in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * until you reach the corner. Skip the next two stitches, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in the corner.
Continue working *skip the next stitch, sc in the next stitch, 5dc in the next stitch, skip the next stitch, sc in the next stitch* until the next corner. Skip the two stitches before the corner and work around the blanket until you reach the first corner, (3dc, ch1) in the same space as the first half of your corner. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
