My pattern follows UK crochet terms. If you are in the USA a TR crochet stitch is your DC. When I mention a DC stitch this is a US Single Crochet (SC).
I used 2 balls of Stylecraft Special Aran wool in shade Empire. I used 2 strands of wool together at the beginning and end of this bag to make it stronger.
Hook size 8
Double threads.
Round 1 – Chain 25. Make 4 TR into the 3rd chain from your hook. Then make 1 TR in each of the next 21 chains. Make 5 TR into the next chain then work down the other side of the original chain making 1 TR in the remaining 21 chains. Slip stitch into the top of the original 2nd chain.
Round 2 – Chain 2, make 1 TR in the first stitch. Make 2 TR in the next 4 stitches . Make 1 TR in each of the next 21 stitches the 2 TR in the next 5 stitches. Make 1 TR in each of the next 21 stitches and slip stitch into the top of the 2nd chain from the start of that row.
Round 3 – Chain 2, make 1 TR into the next stitch. Make 2 TR into the next 8 stitches. Then make 1 TR into the next 23 stitches. Make 2 TR into the next 8 stitches then 1 TR into the remaining 21 stitches. Slip stitch into the top of the original chain 2.
Round 4, 5 & 6 – Chain 2, make 1 TR into each stitch of this round. Slip stitch into the top of the original 2 chain.
I used 2 strands of wool for these first 6 rows. I then used 1 strand for the following 10 rows. To do this I kept both balls of yarn attached and used them for alternate rows, swapping them over at the slip stitch and chain 2 at the end and beginning of each row.
Single thread.
Round 7- 16 – Chain 2, make 1 TR into each stitch of this round. Slip stitch into the top of the original 2 chain.
Double threads.
Round 17 – Chain 2, make 1 TR into each stitch of this round. Slip stitch into the top of the original 2 chain.
Round 18 – Chain 2, make 1 TR into the next 23 stitches. Then chain 50. Leave a gap of 10 stitches along this row of the bag. To re-join this chain to the main bag, put your yarn over your hook, put your hook through the next stitch then that will become your next TR. Make 1 TR into the next 26 stitches. Chain 50, leaving a gap of 10 stitches again. Make 1 TR as before then slip stitch into the beginning of the original chain 2.
Round 19 – Chain 2, make 1 TR into each stitch from the previous row. When you get to the two areas of chain 50 make 1 DC into each of these chains. Make 1 TR into the remaining stitches and slip stitch into the top of the original chain 2.
Secure and cut your thread then sew in the ends.
Hope you enjoy making and using this bag as much as I have.
