Baby/Toddler: 15.5” circumference x 6” high (measured flat) – stretches up to 17” head circumference

Small/Medium: 21” circumference x 8” high (measured flat) – stretches up to 24” head circumference

Large: 23” circumference x 9” high (measured flat) – stretches up to 26” head circumference

30 (50, 75) yds. contrast color (CC)

Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 12 sts & 8 rows = 4” in double crochet on size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook

Pattern notes:

Beanies are worked from center top of crown down to lower edge, in alternating color stripes and joined rounds of single and double crochet.

Do not turn at end of each round but continue in same direction every round.

At each color change, drop and pick up colors as instructed, stranding unused color loosely up inside of work. Do not cut colors until directed to do so.

Beanie

For all sizes:

Rnd 1: With MC, ch 4, join into ring (or use magic disappearing beginning loop method: wrap yarn around finger once, insert hook into this loop, yarn over and draw strand through loop on finger); ch 3, work 11 dc in ring; drop MC (but do not cut it), insert hk into top of beg ch-3, join CC by pulling it through top of beg ch-3 & through lp on hk, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (12 dc)

Rnd 2 (inc rnd): With CC, ch 1, work 2 sc in ea dc around, drop CC (but do not cut it), insert hk into top of beg sc, pick up MC by pulling it through top of beg sc & through lp on hk, ready to work next rnd with MC; do not turn (24 sc)

Rnd 3 (inc rnd): With MC, ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch, dc in next sc, *2 dc in next sc, dc in next sc, rep from * around, drop MC, insert hk in top of beg ch-3, pick up CC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (36 dc)

Rnd 4: With CC, ch 1, sc in ea dc around, drop CC, insert hk into top of beg sc, pick up MC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with MC; do not turn (36 sc)

Rnd 5 (inc rnd): With MC, ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch, dc in ea of next 2 sc, *2 dc in next sc, dc in ea of next 2 sc, rep from * around, drop MC, insert hk into top of beg ch-3, pick up CC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (48 dc)

For Baby/Toddler size only:

Rnd 6: With CC, ch 1, sc in ea dc around, drop CC, insert hk into top of beg sc, pick up MC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with MC; do not turn (48 sc)

Rnd 7: With MC, ch 3, dc in ea sc around, drop MC, insert hk into top of beg ch-3, pick up CC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (48 dc)

Rnds 8-11: Rep Rnds 6-7. At end of Rnd 11, fasten off and cut MC (leaving a 6” tail for weaving in later).

Continue with CC only for remainder of hat.

Rnd 12: With CC, ch 1, sc in ea dc around, join with sl st; do not turn.

Rnd 13: Ch 3, dc in ea sc around, join with sl st; do not turn.

Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in ea dc around, join with sl st; do not turn.

Fasten off and weave in all tails.

For Small/Medium size only:

Rnd 6: With CC, ch 1, sc in ea dc around, drop CC, insert hk into top of beg sc, pick up MC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with MC; do not turn (48 sc)

Rnd 7 (inc rnd): With MC, ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch, dc in ea of next 3 sc, *2 dc in next sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc, rep from * around, drop MC, insert hk into top of beg ch-3, pick up CC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (60 dc)

Rnd 8: With CC, ch 1, sc in ea dc around, drop CC, insert hk into top of beg sc, pick up MC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with MC; do not turn (60 sc)

Rnd 9: With MC, ch 3, dc in ea sc around, join with sl st, drop MC, insert hk into top of beg ch-3, pick up CC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (60 dc)

Rnds 10-15: Rep Rnds 8-9.

At end of Rnd 15, fasten off and cut MC (leaving 6” tail for weaving in later).

Continue with CC only for remainder of hat.

Rnd 16: With CC, ch 1, sc in ea dc around, join with sl st; do not turn.

Rnd 17: Ch 3, dc in ea sc around, join with sl st; do not turn.

Rnd 18: Ch 1, sc in ea dc around, join with sl st; do not turn.

For Large size only:

Rnd 7 (inc rnd): With MC, ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch, dc in ea of next 3 sc, *2 dc in next sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc, rep from * around, drop MC, insert hk into top of beg ch-3, pick up CC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (60 dc)

Rnd 8: With CC, ch 1, sc in ea dc around, drop CC, insert hk into top of beg sc, pick up MC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with MC; do not turn (60 sc)

Rnd 9 (inc rnd): With MC, ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch, dc in ea of next 4 sc, *2 dc in next sc, dc in ea of next 4 sc, rep from * around, drop MC, insert hk into top of beg ch-3, pick up CC & join as before, ready to work next rnd with CC; do not turn (72 dc)

Variation:
