Knitting vs Crochet
Dec 26, 2020 09:43 AM
Hello everyone,
If I want to learn to knit or crochet, which would be easier to learn first? My sister says crocheting is easier, but I like the way knitted stuff looks better.
How do you think? Is it really hard to begin with knitting?
I STARTED WITH CROCHETING AT AGE 8. LEARNED ALL THE STITCHES WHICH LATER IN LIFE WITH THE HELP OF SOME DIRECTIONS, I LEARNED THEIR NAMES SO I COULD THEN FOLLOW PRINTED DIRECTIONS.
I started with knitting, then crochet, then Tunisian crochet. Knitting is harder because fixing it means tearing out and making sure you still have all your stitches! Crochet, you just frog it (rop-it, rip-it). But, a teacher in one of the classes I too, for knitting says to always use a lifeline — when you have a row that you know is correct, run a different yarn through all the stitches on your needle — then, you can rip it out and not lose your stitches. Start with something simple, like a dishcloth- it won't matter if you make mistakes, you will use it anyway, and the cotton yarn you use is inexpensive.
I learned how to knit at age 7. I did not know at that time how to read a pattern, but learned that later. Knitting is as easy as crochet but crochet is faster, for me.
I started with knitting at age 12 o13 and learned crochet at about 40. You can start with the one you feel better for you. You are always in time to learn. One helps each other to optimize your projects. Surely both are very relaxing.
Hi Amelia! Happy New Year!
As to which is easier to learn, this is a question that is entirely up to the person you ask. I've talked to people who swore that knitting was easier, and others who swore by crochet. In my own opinion, I knit only rarely simply because it takes so much longer to finish a project than crocheting. This is because each row is worked in 2 steps, while in crochet each row is worked in one step. I've been crocheting for about 50 years now and love it.
Whichever you choose, good luck with it. Once you learn (neither one is hard to learn) you'll probably love it as much as the rest of us knitters and crocheters do!
