You’ll need:

Approx 100g Bulky/Chunky Weight Yarn in Autumn Shades (in this pattern: James C Brett Chunky Marble MC7 Autumn Mix);

Crochet hook 6 mm.

Measurements: 36cm wide at the bottom and 26cm wide at the top

Stitches control: 10 sts x 9 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) – Yo and insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the dc of previous row. Complete as for a regular dc stitch.

Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc) - Yo and insert hook from the back to the front around the post of the dc of previous row. Complete as for a regular dc stitch.

V-Stitch (v st) – Work (dc 1, ch1, dc 1) in st indicated.

Instructions

Ch82, join last ch to first with a slip stitch being careful not to twist the chain.

Rnd 1: Ch3 (counts as a dc), dc in every st around, join last dc to ch3 with a slp st (82 dc).

Rnd 2: Ch3 (counts as a dc), alternate fpdc and bpdc around, join as before (82 dc).

Rnd 3: Ch2 (counts as a hdc), hdc in every st around, joining last hdc to ch2 with a slp st (82 hdc).

Rnd 4: Ch2 (counts as a hdc), hdc in every st around into the front loop only, join as before (82 hdc).

Rnd 5: Ch2 (counts as a hdc), hdc into every st around into the lower loop behind the back loop, join - see example within images below (82 hdc).

Rnds 6 - 11: Repeat rounds 4 and 5 three times. For a photo tutorial of the crocodile stitch which follows, please see the pages at the end of this pattern.

Rnd 12: Ch4, dc into same st (counts as a v st), *skp 2 sts, dc, ch1 and dc into same st (v st)*, repeat from * to * around, join (26 v sts)

Rnd 13: Ch3 (counts as a dc), working from top to bottom around post of first dc of first v st, work 4 fpdc, ch 1, turn work so v st is sideways and post of second dc of v st is upside down (v point of v st will be facing right), working from bottom to top around post of second dc of v st, work 5 fpdc * skip next v st, working from top to bottom around post of first dc of next v st, work 5 fpdc, ch 1, turn work so v st is sideways, working from bottom to top around post of second dc of v st, work 5 fpdc, rep from * across to last dc, sl st in top of last dc; join (13 scales).

Rnd 14: Ch4, dc into same st (counts as a v st), work a v st in next ch1 sp, * yo, insert hook in both next ch1 sp and in space between scales in front of ch1 sp and complete a v st, work a v st in next ch1 sp, rep from * across to last dc, dc in in top of last st; join (26 v sts).

Rnd 15: Ch3 (counts as a dc), working from top to bottom around post of first dc of first v st, work 4 fpdc, ch 1, turn work so v st is sideways and post of second dc of v st is upside down (v point of v st will be facing right), working from bottom to top around post of second dc of v st, work 5 fpdc * skip next v st, working from top to bottom around post of first dc of next v st, work 5 fpdc, ch 1, turn work so v st is sideways, working from bottom to top around post of second dc of v st, work 5 fpdc, rep from * across to last dc, sl st in top of last dc; join (13 scales).

Rnd 16: Ch3, *dc into space above the horizontal fpdc of scale below (see photo below) and then dc into ch1 space, dc into space above the horizontal fpdc of scale below, dc into centre of scale below*, repeat from * to * around, ch1, join (51 sts)

Rnd 17: Ch3, alternate fpdc and bpdc around, join.

Rnd 18: Ch1, slp st all the way around, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
