Crochet Bucket Hat Pattern

Making the Body of the Hat

Crown Section

Round 1: to begin, you want to make the adjustable ring known as a magic ring. After the magic ring has been made, make the first sc stitch into that mr. Also in the same magic ring, make 6 more sc sts, then join with a sl st to the first sc st. (7sc)

Round 2: ch 1, (inc in each sc st) around, join with a sl st to the first ch st. (14sc)

Round 3: ch 1 (inc, sc in the next st) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 4: ch 1 (inc, 2 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 5: ch 1 (inc, 3 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 6: ch 1 (inc, 4 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 7: ch 1 (inc, 5 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 8: ch 1 (inc, 6 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 9: ch 1 (inc, 7 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 10: ch 1 (inc, 8 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 11: ch 1 (inc, 9 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 12: ch 1 (inc, 10 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 13: ch 1 (inc, 11 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Repeat these steps, increasing until the hat diameter is the same as the head circumference you are making the hat for. When the crown of the hat is the right size, continue to the Body of the Hat.

Middle Section

Round 14: ch 1, working in the BLO, make sc BLO in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 15 – 33: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first ch sp.

Continue crocheting in each stitch around, until the hat is as tall as you desire it to be. Typically, it should come just above the ears. Then you can begin on the brim of the hat.

Keep in mind that you can make the brim of the hat as narrow or as wide as you want it to be.

Wide Brim Section

Round 34: ch 1 (inc, 8 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 35: ch 1 (inc, 9 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 36: ch 1 (inc, 10 sc in the next sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Round 37-41: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.

Finishing

Round 42: working in the FLO make ch 1, sc FLO in the next sts around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp. Finish off, and weave in the yarn tail so that it is completely hidden.

Tips for Crocheting a Bucket Hat

Work in Rounds

I have suggested working this hat in spiral rounds separated by joining your stitches with a slip stitch. However, this is not required. If you prefer, you can work this hat in a continuous round.

This means that you would work the hat pattern as instructed above, but use a stitch marker to tell where one round starts and ends. Also, to work in continuous rounds you will want to skip joining the round with a slip stitch. Otherwise, the pattern above may still be followed.

Type of Yarn Changes Size

Remember the type of yarn you use will determine what crochet hook size you use, and ultimately the size of your hat. If you are using a different type of yarn, you will need to adjust accordingly so that the hat still fits you when it is completed.

Creating a Stiff Brim if Your Hat Brim is too Floppy

When you are crocheting the brim, an easy way to make it a little stiffer is to use a smaller crochet hook when you reach the brim part. You don’t want to use one that is a lot smaller, or else it will be noticeable in your stitches. Rather, use one that is just a little smaller to help stiffen up the brim of your bucket hat.

Tips for Color Change

When making this crocheted bucket hat pattern, I changed color, and to add to stripes on the side of the body of the hat. You can change color whenever you prefer, this is simply my preference.
