size '30' thread
size '8' hook

notes:
this pattern will also work well with size '10' thread and a size '0' hook
finished size with size '30' thread is nice for a coaster, with size '10' thread pattern yields a roughly 5 1/2" doily

special instructions:
to make shell - 3 dc, ch 1 , 3 dc in next or specified space or stitch

pattern:
ch 10, join w/ sl st to form ring
Rnd 1: ch 3, 19 dc in ring, sl st to 3rd beg ch; 20 dc (beg ch counts as 1st dc now and through out)
Rnd 2: ch 4, (dc, ch 1) in ea dc around, join w/ sl st to 3rd beg ch; 20 ch-sps
Rnd 3: sl st in ch-sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-sp, 3 dc in ea ch-sp around; 60 dc
Rnd 4: ch 5, (skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 2) around, join w/ sl st to 3rd beg; 30 ch-sps
Rnd 5: sl st in next ch-sp, ch 3 , 2 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1) around, join w/ sl st to 3rd beg ch; 30 ch-sps
Rnd 6: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in ch-sp, (ch 3, 2 dc) in same ch-sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in ea ch-sp around, join w/ sl st to 3rd beg ch
Rnd 7: sl st in next 2 dc, ch 1, (sc in ch-sp, work shell in next ch-sp) around, sl st in 1st sc, finish off
Optional Contrasting Border: join w/ sc to any dc of Rnd 7, * sc in ea dc to ch-sp, (sc, ch 7, sc) in ch-sp rep from * around, sc in any remaining dc, join w/ sl st to 1st sc
