Getting Started

FINISHED SIZE 20" neck circumference, 46" bottom edge circumference, 17 3/4" deep; size is adjustable.

YARN Plymouth Yarn Company Baby Alpaca Grande (100% baby alpaca; 110 yd [100 m]/ 3 1/2 oz [100 g]; (6): #282 fox, 3 skeins.

HOOK Size N/13 (9 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

NOTIONS St marker (m); yarn needle.

GAUGE 9 sts and 12 rows = 4" in sc blo, unstretched.

Notes

Cowl is worked sideways in rows, beg at center back. After first row of fsc, all subsequent rows are worked in blo.

To adjust size: A regular segment (Rows 2-5) measures about 1 1/4" wide at neck and 2 3/4" wide at bottom edge. A shoulder segment (Rows 11-12) measures about 1/2" wide at neck and 1 3/4" wide at bottom edge.

For larger circumference: Either add a regular segment to front and back section for additional 2" at neck and 5 1/2" at bottom edge (seam will be slightly off center), or add a shoulder segment to each shoulder section for additional 1" at neck and 3 1/2" at bottom edge.

For smaller circumference: Either remove a regular segment from front and back section to reduce circumference by 2" at neck and 5 1/2" at bottom edge (seam will be slightly off center), or remove a shoulder segment from each shoulder section to reduce circumference by 1" at neck and 3 1/2" at bottom edge.

To adjust length: Add or remove 2 sts at neck edge (adjusts length of turtleneck) or 2 sts at bottom edge (adjusts capelet length) for every 1".

Left back section:

Row 1: (RS) Fsc 40, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc blo across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc blo in first 20 sts, hdc blo in next 4 sts, dc blo in next 6 sts, tr blo in next 10 sts, turn.

Rows 4-5: Rep Row 2.

Rows 6-10: Rep Rows 2-5, then rep Row 2—2 tr segments.

Shoulder shaping:

Row 11: Ch 1, sc blo in first 20 sts, hdc blo in next 2 sts, dc blo in next 2 sts, tr blo in next 16 sts, turn.

Row 12: Rep Row 2.

Rows 13-23: Rep Rows 11-12 five times, then rep Row 12—8 tr segments.

Front section:

Rows 24-40: Rep Rows 2-9 two times, then rep Row 2—12 tr segments.

Shoulder shaping: Rows 41-53: Rep Rows 11-23—18 tr segments.

Right back section: Rows 54-60: Rep Rows 2-8—20 tr segments. Fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.

FINISHING

With RS facing, using mattress stitch, sew back lp of last row to front lp of first row from top edge to bottom edge. Weave in ends. Block gently.
